According to the Guiness Book of World Records, if you relegate the Bible to a work of fiction, Dr. Benjamin Spock’s The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care outsold all non-fiction books from its release in 1946 until 1998 — more than 50 million copies.
Dr. Benjamin Spock was an atheist and highly active in his oppostion to the Viet Nam war; sought the hightest political offices; was dealt with harshly by the US goverment; and was referred to as a “leftist” with “socialist” leanings by the “religious right”. In the 1950s, Charles Schulz included Dr. Spock in several Peanuts comic strips.
What is the use of physicians like myself trying to help parents to bring up children healthy and happy, to have them killed in such numbers for a cause that is ignoble?
